Anime

So it comes to no great surprise that I like anime. I watch it, I share it with friends, I talk about it, and I even attend conventions for it. I was once the president of my university's anime club and I am in charge of getting largish groups from LA/MS to TX for A-Kon every summer. I've even dabbled in cosplay, though it's not really my thing.

Shows that have caught my attention completely in the last couple of years include:
Mushishi
Moyashimon
Kuroshitsuji
Eden of the East

Pink
Pink and I have a love/hate relationship. I've always adored pink since I was a little girl, but I have the tendency to OD on a certain color/item/thing and them reject it completely for at least a year before I can stand being around it again.

Pynk, variant of Pink inspired by my WyldKyss handle's tendency for y's before i's, is the name I use for anime sites and con badges. Last year's A-Kon badge was P-Ko in honor of Project A-Ko, and A-Kon's 20th anniversary.

My hair was all pink for a couple of years there. This summer, pink streaks have started to creep back onto my scalp while I sleep.

Glasses

I wear them. Contacts are creepy. People shouldn't voluntarily place things on their bare eyeballs. Ever.

I have a mild astigmatism and am slightly near sighted. I suspect growing up in front of computer screens may have something to do with the later part. My glasses are always UV coated, for what it's worth.

No, it's actually Joan Jett & the Blackhearts!

Jett always puts on an amazing show. Despite the 100ºF+ heat (higher because we were standing on pavement for a few hours), it was well worth it to see her play live. How does a woman get to be 50 and still look that amazing AND still kick that much ass??

Our little group that went included me, Jack, Melissa, Jaybert, and Billy. We later met up with Andy, Shawn, Drew, Shana, and the 19 year old (I just went blank). I'm surprised so many geeks got together in the heat for a show. :) Then again, Jubilee!Jam suddenly had a huge influx of attendees when it was Jett's time at the stage. Everyone loves rock and roll.

A-Kon 20 Badges

A-Kon 20 was, as usual, a fully jam-packed weekend.

I was busy nearly every second of every day. There wasn't any real down time except when I was in line for some events. Despite this, there were still events I wanted to go to and people I wanted to see that just didn't get done. So despite the awesome time I had, I still am sulking a bit over what didn't get done.

I'm still exhausted, too - so let's bullet list things that stand out.

* Belligerence was at level red for the weekend. A-Kon does this to us.
* Air pollution, it would seem, was a level orange. Lovely.
* There was a zillion people dressed in some sort of victoriana getup, but only a choice handful of people that were actually steampunkish. I wish I'd gotten a picture of the copper and gear-ish/gadgety baby stroller that one lady used for her child though - it was pretty sweet.
* Speaking of which, SEVERAL dealers were pandering to the various 'punk scenes this year.
* No Storm Troopers this year, and I only saw one Vader. There was a iphone controlled R2D2 though..
* STARS and other Racoon PD types were everywhere for the Resident Evil types, as well as a handful of evil nurses and Pyramid Head.
* Texas de Brazil was awesome. We became meat snobs. I'll have none of that substandard flank sir. Where is more of that sirloin? Only the filet mignon with bacon will be accepted. Oh wait, the parmesean chicken was amazing too. NOM. Well worth blowing our money for the weekend here.
* After how many years of the Kon at this location, we finally discovered a nice liquor store about three blocks away. The Cambodian dude that was running it was very helpful. He said they delivered, too... but I can't recall the name of the shop.
* The pool remained open almost all weekend, but the water was visibly murky from our hotel room views.
* I think it's a little more fun when you can cosplay at least a tiny bit, and I didn't get any done this year.
* The Boardie Meet Up was the only panel I attended in full, as usual. Long let me sit in the front and feel important and throw things like a girl. There were about 50 people in the room so it was pretty sweet.
* Twilight Panel might have been fun if we'd carried fuller flasks, but some of the people were already too tanked anyway.
* Too many alpha type personalities in a room can cause explosions if turned against each other. Otherwise it's just hilarity when directed at cosplay critiques.
* The Cosplay Contest this year zoomed by quickly. I'm curious how the cosplayers feel about pre-regging before getting on site this year?
* I missed the concert. As always.
* I missed BOTH the Steampunk Ball and the Masquerade Ball.
* I attended both dance/raves late at night though. Friday's was amazing - Keiichi.net's guy and Spunky da Bunny mixed with a happy hardcore/anime dance mix theme and the atmosphere in the room was visible. They got to mix until 4 am. However the Saturday night dance with Void and Johnny Violence was more traditional industrial and just wasn't as exciting as the night before.
* In general, the con felt like it peaked Friday night and lagged by Saturday night.
* I missed the Misfits of Comedy Improv completely this year :( We were tied up still after the fire drama. See next entry.
* We were gearing up for a smoke break and food run when the fire alarm went off in North Tower. It smelled like burning rubber on 9th floor where we were. We got evacuated ok, but then Melissa took a nasty spill on the ground level. Tinker Bell on med staff, and a guy dressed as Wolvie who may have been staff too were there so they helped IMMEDIATELY and were very helpful in making sure she was ok.
* We got a pizza. The pizza dude was creepy and told Billy that he should rub Melissa's soreness out, even though her husband was around. Creeeeepy. Cheese pizza was good, but...
* We got back to the room finally and discovered our floor was soaking wet. Their room was very water damaged and the hotel guy said we had to get our stuff and move rooms immediately. UGhhhhhh! They told us someone next door had a blanket and pillow catch on fire, though I've heard conflicting reports since. Either way they were cleaning up when we showed up. A hotel guy helped a little and a kon patrol guy - Bumble Bee was his badge name - helped us move rooms not once, but twice (the first room we were sent to was covered in KFC. WTF!?) while wearing geta sandals. Many stairs were climbed and elevators taken.
* Sheraton comped them two nights stay for the major inconvenience.
* Meanwhile, Sheraton tried to charge us THREE TIMES for valet parking. I paid the full stay in cash, then they charged my card - should be getting a credit on that so I'll keep an eye on it - and then tried to charge us in cash again to leave. My indignation handled the last one at least. This is my only complaint about the hotel for my personal stay.
* Dealer's room didn't have much that I was looking for, but I got some cool Moyashimon goodies. I will remember to take a picture later. Jack got some figurines of the girls from Full Metal Panic and a little chibi Rei keychain. Kyle gave me a Magi charm for my DS.
* Plum hichew is very odd.

I'll remember other random notes later. When I do, I'll try to post them!
